ABSTRACT

Ultrasound shows musculoskeletal anatomy from a new and unique perspective (Van Holsbeeck & Introcaso, 2001). Musculoskeletal sonography is an advanced application of an established technology to evaluate the acute or chronic painful condition. Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound has been used since the 1970s throughout the world, in the Olympics, and with professional and collegiate athletes, and is recently becoming accepted in the United States (Chapman & Black, 2003). The capability of ultrasound to demonstrate fluid with great sensitivity and specificity proves extremely useful in the diagnosis of osteoarticular diseases (Van Holsbeeck & Introcaso, 2001).
