ABSTRACT

Metabolomics basically deals with cellular metabolites. It is widely recognized as a branch of postgenomic science. Plant metabolomics helps in phenotyping even in the absence of any visible marked changes, either in the plant or in its cells. Plant metabolomic studies are apparently complex [1]. The plant metabolome represents all metabolites and other molecules that are involved in and produced during a plant cell’s metabolism. In other words, plant metabolome is a ngerprint impression of all the processes taking place in a cell [2-4]. The usual focus is on small molecules [5,6]. Hence, plant metabolomics can be considered as a relatively newer branch of science dealing exclusively with plant metabolomes. Metabolomics is sometimes known as metabonomics [7]. Metabolomics is different from the traditional studies on metabolites in the sense that it focuses on cellular processes instead of just some metabolites or enzymes [8].
