ABSTRACT

Although more and more biometric applications have emerged in

the market, many people are still skeptical about this technology.

This lack of trust mainly springs from security and privacy concern.

It is true that current biometric technologies are far from perfect,

although some of them can already achieve 99.99% accuracy. First

of all, people are worried that their biometric information could

be stolen by some bad guys and be used to invade into their

personal accounts. For example, fingerprint can be obtained from

the things we touch every day; face and iris information can be

directly obtained by taking a photo of one’s face or eyes. Once the

information is lost, there is no easy way to recover it as reissuing a

password. Moreover, there are still no complete laws or regulations

to protect the privacy of biometric data, which makes people feel

uncomfortable and intrusive while furnishing these data. Also,

standards for some biometric modalities are still missing, such as

the iris, which prevents their relevant technologies from spreading

widely. Last but not least, the prices of some biometric devices are

still very high, which makes them difficult to be acquired in the

market. In this chapter, we discuss the possible solutions to these

problems.
