ABSTRACT
Particles that are deposited on the airway mucosa or alveolar epithelium may be removed from the lung through a variety of mechanisms (see Chap. 3), or they may be taken up by airway and alveolar epithelial cells. This chapter is concerned with the interactions of mineral particles and epithelial cells and, in particular, the questions of what factors control the uptake of mineral particles by epithelial cells.
