ABSTRACT

The definition of partial sleep deprivation (SD) usually refers to preventing individuals from obtaining their usual amount of daily sleep (2,3). This is typically

accomplished in humans by restricting time in bed at night and prohibiting daytime naps. Partial SD is analogous to a restricted sleep schedule in which sleep is limited to 3-5 rather than 7-8 hr. SSSD refers to depriving subjects of a specific sleep stage. NREM stages 3 and/or 4 (slow-wave sleep in humans or its equivalent in animals) or REM sleep are the usual target stages in SSSD experiments.
