ABSTRACT

Cerebral palsy is a neurologic non-progressive disorder affecting the central nervous system. The motor impairment can be classified as spastic, athetotic, atonic or a mixed form. It is very difficult to predict the outcome of surgery in patients with athetosis as the involuntary fluctuations in muscle tone can result in undesirable deformities after surgery, which therefore is usually contraindicated in patients with pure athetosis. There are, however, indications for surgery in order to improve function in patients with spastic or mixed disorders.
