ABSTRACT

Hydration remains the cornerstone for the prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). It is safe, effective, and inexpensive.1-7 Unfortunately, various important hydration details have not been well examined, including the timing and rate of the infusion and the respective values of intravenous and oral hydration. This chapter will try to address the following points:

• Effectiveness of hydration for CIN prevention; • Route of administration; • Type of saline solution; • Hydration period, infusion rate and total hydration volume; • Hydration in critical patients.
