ABSTRACT

Disorders of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus metabolism are frequently observed in

SICU patients. Although divalent ion abnormalities are usually asymptomatic, they have

the potential to impair cardiovascular and neuromuscular function. A high index of suspic-

ion for these disorders should be maintained, and routine monitoring of serum calcium,

magnesium, and phosphorus levels is warranted in most critically ill patients.
