ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Traditionally, immune and infl ammatory mechanisms of disease pathogenesis were applied only to disorders characterized by acute onset and progression associated with obvious clinical signs of infl ammation. However, it has become clear that many chronic degenerative diseases associated with aging demonstrate important immune and infl ammatory components. Increasing evidence points to a pivotal connection between immune mechanisms of disease and agerelated macular degeneration (AMD).
