ABSTRACT

As mentioned in Chapter 15, legislation and litigation involving wildlife can apply to both free-living and captive species. ose in captivity are subject not only to conservation laws but also to legislation relating to animal health, animal welfare, the, damage to property, and authorisation to keep animals for certain purposes such as education, display, sport, trade, rehabilitation or captive-breeding. Forensic investigation and evidence may be required not solely in crime but in insurance disputes, planning inquiries, civil law claims in negligence, nuisance, trespass or liability for injury or damage caused by animals and in professional negligence (malpractice). Other issues that may need the support of forensic evidence include veterinary professional discipline, medicines law, health and safety, the movement and transportation of animals and biosecurity.
