ABSTRACT

Domesticated tomato, Solanum lycopersicum, is both an economically important crop species, and a model organism for genetic, developmental, and physiological research. A long history of scientifi c interest in tomato has culminated in the development of S. lycopersicum as a model genome for the family Solanaceae, which contains several other important crop species. Together with the clade containing its wild relatives, tomato is currently being developed as an unmatched resource-rich system for diverse areas of biological research.
