resulting from genetic and/or epigenetic alterations in the MMR genes, the persistent base-base mismatches and IDLs remaining after DNA replication result in a mutator phenotype with a 102-103 elevation of spontaneous mutations highlighted by microsatellite instability (MSI) and a signifi cant risk of cancer (Jiricny 2006).
