ABSTRACT
As humanity enters the 21st century, it fi nds itself in a situation where water and energy are durably linked in a “Water-Energy Nexus” (Fig. 2.2). In addition to sustaining human populations and their food producing activities, water is now used to make energy directly through bio-fuels, or indirectly through the extraction and processing of hydrocarbons, and the generation of electric power.
