ABSTRACT
The gold standard for the diagnosis of endometriosis is laparoscopy. As laparoscopy is an invasive procedure, the diagnosis is often combined with surgical treatment. Although this combined approach may be justifiable, it does not conform with the standard stratification for a surgical procedure that proceeds from diagnosis, to assessment of therapeutic options, and, finally, to operative intervention with informed patient consent.
