ABSTRACT

Endometriosis, since the first reported case by Von Rokitansky in 1860, is the most enigmatic disease entity in gynecology. The incidence of endometriosis varies between 1 and 10% in women during their reproductive lives. Treatment is modulated according to the woman’s desire for fertility together with pain and other symptoms. Treatments range from hormone manipulation, combined with analgesic therapy, to minor and major surgical interventions. In many instances when pain is unable to be controlled or the woman has completed her family, many surgeons advocate definitive therapy in the form of hysterectomy with removal of endometriotic implants with or without bilateral oophorectomy.
