ABSTRACT

Within government circles, big data is well positioned as an administration initiative that is supported by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Called the Big Data Research and Development Initiative, it commits a $200 million dollar investment into big data among six federal agencies, including Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA’s) XDATA Project that is chartered to

1. develop scalable algorithms for processing imperfect data in distributed data stores, and

2. create effective human-computer interaction tools for facilitating rapidly customizable visual reasoning for diverse missions.
