ABSTRACT

As we begin this chapter on nanosafety and the use of animals and cell culture in determining safety strategies, we must rst understand the environmental culture surrounding nanotechnology and the industrial variables that have brought us to this point in time. In the fall of 2009, a meeting was held in Triangle Park, North Carolina with representatives including industrial scientists, university researchers, government regulators, and consumer advocates examining the known safety data concerning nanoscale titanium dioxide. One of the participants, a Connecticut toxicologist from the Yale School of Public Health and the University of Connecticut School of Community Medicine, Dr. Gary Ginsburg stated, “The horse has already left the barn, it’s already out there. In this case the environment is the Guinea pig. All we can do at this point is really try to do a good job of seeing what is getting into the human
