ABSTRACT

Pleasing aesthetic characteristics vary widely among cultures. They have changed somewhat through history; however, general characteristics associated with the esthetic face as described by Leonardo Da Vinci in the 15th century have changed very little overall. Stereotyping of personality characteristics is often formed based upon the initial evaluation of facial features. Society tends to utilize terms such as ‘‘strong’’ chin or ‘‘weak’’ chin, implying characteristics associated with a personality trait. As one of the more prominent facial features, the chin has been used to characterize masculinity when prominent, and a weak or submissive personality when recessive.
