ABSTRACT

Beauty is defined by Webster as ‘‘the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.’’ For centuries, people have attempted to accentuate or recapture their beauty by various means. It was not until recently, with advances in modern medicine, that safe and effective surgical options have become available. Medical understanding of facial anatomy and the physiology of aging have provided the foundation for current surgical interventions. These interventions have evolved, especially in the last 40 years, to enhance and restore a more youthful and healthy appearance. Most notably, rhytidectomy has proven most effective in achieving these goals. This chapter will provide an analysis of facial aging and various surgical therapies aimed at reversing this process including rhytidectomy, brow elevation, and cervicofacial liposuction.
