ABSTRACT
This chapter will consider architectural, cellular, and regulatory aspects of the formation of alveoli and hence of the dimensions of the lung gas-exchange surface area (Sa). We shall focus on four topics we think are especially relevant to neonatologists: the effect on the developing lung of hyperoxia, hypoxia, corticosteroids, and retinoic acid.
