ABSTRACT

EPCs are defined as bone marrow-derived cells that move into the circulatory system in response to cytokines such as VEGF (Li et al. 2006). As mentioned above, EPC contributes to vasculogenesis and tumor angiogenesis. Interestingly, significantly higher EPCs levels have been found in the peripheral circulation of breast (Naik et al. 2008), ovarian (Su et al. 2010) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients (Dome et al. 2006) and those suffering from glioblastoma (Greenfield et al. 2009), chronic lymphocytic (Gora-Tybor et al. 2009), acute myeloid leukemia (Wierzbowska et al. 2008) and lymphoma (Igreja et al. 2007).
