ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the perceived potential and influences that social networks and new forms of sociability exert or may exert on cities and on use of urban public spaces from the analysis of Brazilian examples. The article provides an introduction to the usage of internet as a space that favors the establishment of a new sociability and lends itself to the development of a collaborative culture. In this context, the social networks are seen as privileged environment for the development and sharing of opinions and as a place of call to action that reconfigures the urban space. Recent examples of this type of action in Brazilian cities originated or supported by digital social networks are presented. Such examples subsidize reflections on the formation of what we call “city as a social network” partly as a result of the current uses of ICT in urban cities.
