ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Napoli is probably the only large European city whose historical center is still inhabited by people, and not only by offices, banks and shopping malls; it has been declared World Heritage by the UNESCO. It is affected by quite a number of problems, among whom some significant geotechnical risks. The mitigation of such risks in the city has to be considered hence as a contribution to the safeguard of an outstanding cultural heritage, besides contributing to a better future for the Neapolitans. The paper reports the main geotechnical problems affecting the city and the initiatives undertaken to solve them. Some interesting cases are discussed in detail.
