ABSTRACT

The major causes of urethritis are outlined in Table 1. N. gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis are the most important microbiological entities considered in men with urethritis. N. gonorrhoeae is well adapted for growth on mucous membranes and can infect any part of the genital tract as well as extragenital sites. C. trachomatis is the most common bacterial pathogen to cause STD and is a copathogen in up to a quarter of men infected with N. gonorrhoeae.
