ABSTRACT
There are many excellent and detailed chapters addressing the clinician’s use of microbiology laboratory services (see the Bibliography). This chapter focuses primarily on the use of tests to detect the presence of microorganisms in the outpatient settingwith emphasis on those tests that can be performed immediately, on site. Specimen collection and transport, pathogen identification by microscopy, rapid diagnostic testing, culture, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing are reviewed.
