ABSTRACT
All ships are governed and regulated by the Intern ational Maritime Organization (IMO) that is responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the preven tion of marine pollution, and classification societies (such as the American Bureau of Shipping [ABS], Det Norske Veritas [DNV], Lloyds Register of Shipping [LRS]) which are responsible for verifying the ship's design, construc tion, and maintenance.
