ABSTRACT
The adaptive immune system has evolved in order to combat the multitude of potential pathogens that may penetrate host defences and initiate disease. The immune system responds to individual pathogens by selecting from its repertoire those mechanisms that are most likely to eliminate the organism. At either end of the spectrum lie cellmediated immunity (CMI) and humoral immunity, but in many infections aspects of both processes are incorporated into the immune response.
