ABSTRACT

Modified diagonalized core system buildings – diagrids - only began to appear in contemporary steel design around the year 2003. All three of the initial examples – The London GLA, Swiss Re and the Hearst Tower – were in development in the offices of Foster+Partners at the same time and the engineering expertise of ARUP was integral to all three projects. Interestingly, all made use of unique variations of the system by virtue of their three dimensional geometry suggesting that the diagrid form could potentially support even more daring feats.
