ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The term tensegrity describes a structural concept and a novel class of structures the architectural form of which is critically determined by the structural concept. Tensegrity structures, in addition to their uncommon structural basis and appearance, are characterized by almost no separation between architectural expression and structural configuration. Accordingly their spatial and tectonic organization that derives from their structural configuration also determines their aesthetic and functional features. Exam ples of projects and applications of the tensegrity concept and tectonics that take advantage of their unusual m orphology and structural and mechanical properties are presented and discussed. Reference is also m ade to the main features of a param etric design m ethodology and a visualization sy stem utilized for the exploration of their architectural and tectonic form and structural design. The presented structures are tensegrity applications for public spaces and buildings.
