ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The paper deals with the Column created in 1937 by the sculptor Constantin Brancusi for the Memorial devoted to the heroes of the First World War 1914-1918 in Targu Jiu, Romania. Column’s function in that Memorial, its megalithic stylization, the three basic principles of shaping adopted by sculptor and Column’s message are successively presented. Author’s view on the value of Column was built up on the involvement of gravitational field in the act of creation. Then, it is shown how the seismic and aeroelastic risks of the Column were physically evaluated. The results of the two investigations were more than positive. There are strong reasons to believe that the Column is not only endless, but also a perfect creation in civil engineering field.
