ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the basic technologies and modules used in the Smart Operating Room (smartOR) project. It describes the aspects of interfaces, nomenclature, patient safety and risk management. The chapter focuses on user interaction, and presents two workstations, one for the surgical workplace and the other for the anaesthesia workplace, which represent the central display and operation panels for all devices in the operating room. It provides a use case as proof of concept and evaluation of the protocols. For the integration of medical devices in the operating room, a service-oriented architecture (SOA) framework has been chosen in the smartOR project. SOA is a paradigm for organising and utilising distributed functionality and resources. To implement SOA, different technologies can be used. In the smartOR project, the proposed integration framework is implemented by building a central communication network called open surgical communication bus.
