ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the Sensium technology health-care platform, with an emphasis on the development, evaluation, optimization and implementation of embedded biomedical algorithms suitable for body-worn devices. Owing to the technological advances in application-specific integrated circuits, it is possible to develop custom biomedical systems-on-chip, intended for production of low-cost and miniaturized wireless wearable monitoring devices that can be easily attached to the body and operate for reasonable periods of time from a single button-cell battery. The chapter discusses the methodology followed to design and develop the embedded algorithms for the Sensium. The Sensium wireless body-sensor node is available in two versions: a disposable version mainly intended for clinicalhealth care and a reuseable version intended for outpatient monitoring and sports applications. The chapter includes a simple explanation of methodology towards implementation of ultralow-power health-care platforms, ranging from the microchips to the software components forming part of the systems.
