1.1 INTRODUCTION

The term “nano” like many other prefixes used in conjunction with Systeme International d’unites (SI units), “nano” comes from a language other than English. Originating from the Greek word “nannas” for “uncle,” the Greek word “nanos” or “nannos” refer to “little old man” or “dwarf.’ Before the term nanotechnology was coined and became popular, the prefixes “nanno-” or “nano-” were used in equal frequency, although not always technically correct.
