ABSTRACT

Image segmentation is the process of defining regions in a 3D image set. Segmentation is used in radiotherapy to identify the normal patient anatomy and target volumes and other regions of interest for density specification or fiducial marking. With the increased utilization of intensity-modulated radiotherapy, the demands on image segmentation are magnified, where all critical structures and target volumes need to be identified on the computed tomography scan acquired during patient simulation. This increased demand warranted easier, more efficient manual segmentation tools as well as robust automatic segmentation strategies.
