Many of the introductory contents in this book have emphasized that seasonally tropical dry forests (STDFs) are among the most threatened ecosystems in the tropics due to anthropogenic stresses, which have caused dramatic impacts on the natural landscapes and transformed once-continuous forests  into a complex mosaic of vegetation units, with a variable degree of human intervention. In response to this complexity, multidisciplinary studies, which cover all ecological aspects of this poorly understood ecosystem, are needed to formulate local, regional, and global policies and strategies that are aimed at guaranteeing forest regeneration while seeking their own sustainable use (Sánchez-Azofeifa et al. 2005c).
