ABSTRACT

Iodine is a naturally occurring non-metallic element of the periodic table’s group VIIA. In nature it exists as a monovalent anion (iodide) in brines and in different molecular compounds, e.g., iodate or more complex organic iodinated compounds. It can exist in several oxidation statuses (–1, 0, +1, +3, +5 and +7); its stable natural isotope is 127I; and it can be soluble in water or in organic solvents depending on its chemical species.
