ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses medical images, their associated information, and how these images are used in 3D radiation treatment planning (RTP) systems. In the context of informatics, emphasis will be placed on communication of imaging information between imaging and RTP systems, design of the RTP system, and a description of some algorithms for information processing. We will focus on external beam treatment, although many of the concepts also apply to brachytherapy planning systems.
