ABSTRACT

Since the 1970s, analysis by MS methods has exploded into a wide and extensive network of scientic disciplines. The early vanguards were chemists, biochemists, biologists, and then molecular biologists; up to now it is difcult to say who is in the lead. MSs are common in a modern laboratory and nearly all academic areas have their MS. It is now common to see a MS center in major universities that serve as wide range of academic disciplines. This has proved to be a viable solution as the state-of-the-art instruments continue to advance rapidly and it is not unusual to see substantial improvements in capability in months rather than years. An entering graduate student can expect to start mass spectra analysis on one machine and nish on a more sensitive, faster, and more capable MS.
