ABSTRACT

Al is a very reactive metal with a high anity for oxygen. Nevertheless, Al is highly resistant to most atmospheres and chemicals. is resistance is due to the protective character of the passive (Al oxide) lm that forms on the metal surface-which rapidly reforms if damaged. e oxide inhibits corrosion because it is both insoluble in a wide range of environments and a good insulator. e oxide lm on Al attains a thickness of about 10 Å on freshly exposed metal in seconds. Oxide growth can be modied by impurities and alloying additions and is accelerated by increasing temperature and humidity (or immersion in water).
