ABSTRACT

Formation of durable chemical bonds is an obvious means to stabilize the interface and has been demonstrated for phenolic/alumina joints (Lewis et al. 1974), silane and other coupling agents (Miller and Ishida 1991, Owen 2002), and sol-gel coatings (Blohowiak et al. 1996, 1998). Silane coupling agents and sol-gel coatings are discussed later.
