ABSTRACT

ASTM B117 (salt fog testing) is an old but still commonly used cabinet test for assessing resistance to corrosion in chloride environments. In the automotive industry, this test is now being replaced by cabinet tests with environments of more representatives of those encountered by automobiles, such as the GM9540 or the SAE J2334 protocols. Large dierences in the measured accelerated corrosion rates of Mg between ASTM B117 and other cabinet tests have been noted; see Figure 2.22 (Hydro Magnesium 2010).
