ABSTRACT

Solar radiation is the basic thermal energy source for the planetary surface. A small portion of the incoming solar flux lies in the short-wave ultraviolet (UV) radiation region [ultraviolet B (UVB)]. Exposure to UVB is harmful to humans in several ways, including sunburn and skin cancer (SC) as well as effects to the eye and immune system. Most of the incoming UVB radiation is absorbed by the stratospheric ozone layer, thereby providing an important protective shield by blocking most of the UVB radiation from reaching the Earth’s surface.
