ABSTRACT

The previous chapter provided an overview of light dosimetry in photodynamic therapy (PDT). This chapter extends that discussion to include other factors that impact the photodynamic dose, including sensitizer concentration, tissue oxygen supply, and physiological factors. The key to understanding how these factors play into dosimetry lies in the basic chemical and photochemical interactions among the sensitizer, oxygen, and tissue. The first section of this chapter will review these interactions and their incorporation into a dosimetric model. The remainder of the chapter will review the various applications of this model and related strategies to PDT dosimetry.
