ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will describe the underlying physiological mechanisms that lead to newborn jaundice and its potential neurological sequelae. We will then discuss the original clinical insights that led to using blue light as a therapy for neonatal jaundice, as well as the photochemistry of this therapy that was subsequently elucidated. We will discuss the clinical evidence for using blue-light therapy and finally discuss recent developments in phototherapy for neonatal jaundice.
