ABSTRACT
Seismic isolation, an acceptable alternative, can be used to avoid having damage to bridge structures and may be achieved at lower initial construction costs. Seismic isolation was initially used to retro-t several important bridges located on the critically important transportation lifeline routes. More recently, seismic isolation has been used on noncritical bridges because of construction cost savings with reduced seismic forces on foundations.
