ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss research on individuals with three levels of engineering design expertise engaged in design tasks in some of our design process and design context research. That research laid the foundation for a subsequent study, wherein we analysed data on an engineering design team of practitioners in action. We expand our data analysis by looking specifically at how and when those design teammembers paid attention to group processes and contextual issues. Results of our earlier research have been used to foster students’ awareness of design processes. Our research results may also help to illuminate the connection between design processes, broad thinking, and teamwork. Additionally, we will present several representations of design processes that we believe may prove helpful in fostering understanding of important aspects of team design.
