ABSTRACT
A smoothing of speckle and preservation of edges are in a general sense divergent. A tradeoff between noise reduction and the preservation of the actual image features and contrast has to be made in order to enhance the relevant image content for diagnostic purposes. Best contrast is meant in the sense of decreasing the variance in a homogeneous region while distinct regions are well defined.
