ABSTRACT

This paper aimed to study the behavior of a LPG tank when submitted to a wildfire. The objective of this work was to determine safety distances for LPG tanks located near the forest. Three different scenarios were considered: the impact on the tank when a clear area separates the tank from a distant crown fire; the impact on the tank when the safety zone is covered with dry or green bush and finally, what happens if a hedge burns near the tank. An experimental work was performed at real scale or medium scale in case of crown fires. For that latter case, the similitude design was defined thanks to a finite elements modeling. Data showed that the LPG tank should remain safe if a mandatory safety distance of 50 meters is respected. It is highly probable that the tank will not fail if the safety distance is reduced to 30 meters.
