ABSTRACT

Wireless technologies are increasingly being used and developed for control system applications. When applied to sensor networks there are challenging risk factors that need to be managed to ensure sufficient reliability of the overall systems. When the target system is a safety instrumented system reliability requirements become critical and care must be taken to ensure development practices are not in conflict with requirements for systems that need to conform to IEC 61508 for programmable and electronic safety systems. This paper compares elements from the project management frameworks PRINCE2 and SCRUM with safety integrity level requirements from IEC 61508 and recommends practices to be adopted in development of application layer software for complex environment such as large intelligent sensor networks as none of the mentioned project management frameworks are found to be well-suited to development of highly complex projects with strict a priori requirements.
