ABSTRACT

Most approaches in knowledge management assumes that ‘knowledge’ can be disembodied, acquired and managed. However, in some cases the ‘knowledge’ is embedded within the context of work and cannot be meaningfully separated from the workplace. In this research, we propose to apply the method of distributed cognition to help analysis of the activity that takes place in the ATC control room. Distributed Cognition analysis makes explicit the dependencies between human actors and artefacts as collaborative work by examining the transformation and propagation of information through various forms of representations. As such, the ‘knowledge’ can be represented in terms of interactions in context, which lends itself for further analysis. In this research, we discuss about the assisting tool for collaborative work of Air Traffic Controllers. And then, show our development of the prototype tool. We attempt to make formalize basic knowledge of controllers for helping to have well understanding about knowledge structure and logical relation from actual work analysis.
